"We need a better system": Maryland crop growers' perspectives on reducing food loss through donation

The donation of unharvested or unsold crops to rescue organizations has been promoted as a strategy improve healthy food access for insecure households while reducing production-level loss and waste (FLW). In this study, we aimed assess the motivations, barriers, facilitators crop FLW reduction among Maryland farmers. We interviewed 18 Maryland-based producers (nine frequent donors nine infrequent, by self-report) in 2016 – 2017, soliciting their perspectives on motivators, process feasibility, interventions at increasing donation. interviews were thematically coded. All respondents aware an option, most expressed interest diverting surpluses human consumption. While financial barriers represented one aspect influencing decisions, respondents also cited convenience, knowledge, liability key considerations. contrast donors, many whom considered moral imperative, some infrequent questioned expectation that they would donate without compensation. Both pro-donation tax incentives, reported being unlikely use them. This research demonstrates facilitators can be diverse. Given existence potential benefits emergency food, our results suggest multiple interventions policies may contribute incentivizing facilitating (or enabling purchase surplus crops) rather than one-size-fits-all approaches. Our findings highlight need prioritize recovery methods enhance growers’ stability.
